Shi Yuqi leaves court in wheelchair at National Games of China

Shi Yuqi suffered an injury that forced him to leave the badminton court in a wheelchair on Monday, casting doubt over his participation at the 2025 BWF World Tour Finals.

The 2025 world champion, representing Jiangsu at the 15th National Games of China, was forced to retire from his men’s singles quarter-final clash against Weng Hongyang.

The 29-year-old had taken the first game 21-19 but was visibly struggling early in the second game and unable to continue.

“I felt that I could keep playing if I really tried, but it would have looked terrible, and I would’ve lost anyway. I think it’s better to prioritise protecting myself,” he said after the match.

With less than a month to go before the World Tour Finals in Hangzhou, Shi now faces the real possibility of missing the chance to defend the title he won last year.

Currently ranked seventh in the HSBC Race to Finals, he was well on track to join compatriot Li Shifeng at the season-ending showpiece.
