Hakimi named African Footballer of the Year ahead of Salah, Osimhen

Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi was named African Footballer of the Year at the 2025 CAF Awards on Wednesday.

The Morocco international beat Liverpool star Mohamed Salah and Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen to the honour after enjoying a trophy-laden 2025 season with PSG.

“[This is] a recognition that crowns years of hard work, success and unforgettable moments,” the 27-year-old posted on his official X account.

“My gratitude goes to my family, my teammates and everyone who works with me every day, on and off the field. Your trust, dedication, and support make me stronger and allow me to grow.”

“Thank you to all the Moroccan people for always standing behind me. I hope this moment inspires every child in our country and across our continent to believe in their dreams and fight for them.”

Hakimi became the first Moroccan to win the award since midfielder Mustapha Hadji in 1998.

It proved to be a landmark night for the Atlas Lions, with the nation sweeping several major awards through Ghizlane Chebbak (Women’s Footballer Player of the Year), Yassine Bounou (Goalkeeper of the Year), Othmane Maamma (Men’s Youth Player of the Year), Doha El Madani (Women’s Youth Player of the Year) and Morocco U-20 (Men’s Team of the Year).
