Sydney FC give A-League blues to Melbourne Victory

Sydney FC piled more misery on Melbourne Victory after claiming a convincing Big Blue win.

A brace from Joe Lolley and a goal from Alex Grant sealed the 3-0 result for the Sky Blues at Leichhardt Oval, extending their winning streak to four matches.

The victory also lifted Ufuk Talay’s side to the top of the A-League Men table, capitalising on Auckland FC’s 1-1 draw at home to Brisbane Roar, which saw the New Zealand outfit slip to second.

“We are full of confidence at the moment as a team,” said two-goal hero Lolley post-match.

“We had to be patient. It was a tough battle in the [rainy] conditions, but we knew [it would] open up and thankfully we took advantage.”

It was a similar story across both cities as Western Sydney Wanderers also earned three points and Melbourne City suffered defeat in respective matches.

The Wanderers finally picked up their first win of the season by edging Central Coast Mariners in a five-goal thriller, while Melbourne City failed to capitalise on their numerical advantage and lost 4-1 to 10-man Adelaide United.

Elsewhere, Newcastle Jets’ poor form continued following a 2-1 loss to Perth Glory, and Wellington Phoenix were beaten at home by Macarthur.
