Martin O’Neill made a dramatic return to the Celtic dugout as interim manager following Brendan Rodgers’ resignation on October 27, 2025. In his brief but remarkable tenure, the 73-year-old gaffer has overseen a dramatic change in fortune, culminating in a historic European victory.

O’Neill’s leadership across six games in all competitions has been exceptional. Most notably, he masterminded a stunning 3-1 win against Feyenoord at De Kuip in the Europa League on November 27, 2025.

Goals from Yang Hyun-jun and Reo Hatate put Celtic in front after Ayase Ueda had given Feyenoord the lead, before Benjamin Nygren’s late goal sealed a landmark victory.

This result was momentous, as it ended Celtic’s 16-game winless away run in Europe.

Domestically, O’Neill has kept Celtic firmly in the Scottish Premiership title race, securing maximum points from all three league matches played under his watch. Furthermore, he guided the Bhoys to glory by defeating rivals Rangers 3-2 in the League Cup semifinal.

In the Europa League, despite an earlier loss to Midtjylland, the recent victory over Feyenoord has revitalized Celtic’s European campaign. The win keeps their hopes of an automatic place in the Round of 16 alive, while Feyenoord now face a difficult path to secure a playoff spot.

Speaking after the momentous win in Holland, O’Neill was full of praise for his squad:

“I thought the team were really fantastic… Essentially from their first attack they scored, but after that we controlled the game. We were magnificent; we basically passed them off the pitch. The whole team were brilliant. To come here and win away from home, in Holland against Feyenoord, it’s just fantastic. We were terrific.”

One Last Dance

O’Neill confirmed that his legendary return is nearing its end, suggesting the victory against Feyenoord was likely his “last European night” as the new permanent manager is expected to arrive soon.

However, the interim boss confirmed he will take charge for one final match: “I think that’s right, I’m still in charge against Hibs this Sunday (30/11/2025), then after that, that’s it. Celebrate for a little while for this win tonight and concentrate on the big game on Sunday.”
