Alexander Isak’s Liverpool career has yet to find momentum, and his latest setback threatens to stall it further.
The striker, who has battled form and fitness since arriving from Newcastle, is now facing an indefinite spell on the sidelines after undergoing surgery on an ankle injury.
The blow came in Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur last Saturday.
Isak opened the scoring at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but was unable to celebrate, having been clattered by Micky van de Ven in the process of converting.
Liverpool confirmed the news in a statement:
“Alexander Isak today successfully underwent surgery on the injury he sustained on Saturday.
The Liverpool striker was injured in a challenge in the process of scoring the opening goal against Tottenham Hotspur and had to be substituted.
After diagnosis, an operation was completed today on an ankle injury that included a fibula fracture.
Isak’s rehabilitation will now continue at the AXA Training Centre, with no timeframe yet placed on his return.”

It is the latest in a series of fitness issues for the Sweden international.
A groin injury kept him out between October and November, and he has yet to complete a full 90 minutes in any of his 16 appearances for the club.
His output has been modest: two goals in the Premier League and one in the League Cup.
For manager Arne Slot, the timing could hardly be worse. Mohamed Salah is away at the Africa Cup of Nations, while Cody Gakpo remains sidelined.
That leaves Federico Chiesa and Hugo Ekitike as the most likely options to shoulder the attacking burden, with teenager Rio Ngumoha potentially in line for significant minutes.
