The 2025-26 Formula E season resumes with round two at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, as the championship returns to Mexico City for a landmark event. This weekend’s race will mark the 10th edition of the Mexico City ePrix and the 150th race in Formula E history.

Pre-coronation of the Season 12 world champion?

An intriguing trend has emerged in recent seasons, with the last three Mexico City ePrix winners going on to claim the drivers’ championship. Oliver Rowland triumphed here in 2025, Pascal Wehrlein in 2024 and Jake Dennis in 2023 — all of whom ultimately lifted the world title.

While it may be coincidence, the Mexico City circuit has long been regarded as one of the toughest on the calendar due to its high altitude, which places unique demands on both drivers and powertrains. Any driver able to master these conditions early in the season could gain a significant psychological and competitive edge in the title race.

Wehrlein returns to his favourite hunting ground

Few drivers have enjoyed as much success in Mexico City as Pascal Wehrlein, and the Porsche driver arrives once again as a focal point of attention.

Since his Formula E debut, the former world champion has recorded two wins and four pole positions at the venue over the past six seasons, including securing Porsche’s maiden Formula E victory here in 2022. His affinity for the circuit is unquestioned.

Wehrlein also showed promising pace at the season opener in São Paulo, setting the fastest time in qualifying before a grid penalty dropped him down the order. He still managed to finish fourth amidst the chaos (see below), underlining his potential to be a leading contender once again in Mexico.

Can Pepe Marti bounce back after horror crash?

The São Paulo ePrix generated headlines for dramatic reasons, with Pepe Martí involved in a frightening, fiery airborne crash after contact with António Félix da Costa and Nico Müller.

The Cupra Kiro driver was fortunate to escape unharmed, but the incident carried consequences. The Spaniard was later handed a penalty that will see him start from the back of the grid in Mexico City, leaving him with a tough task to recover on one of Formula E’s most demanding circuits.

How he responds will be one of the weekend’s most closely watched subplots.
