Malaysia, Indonesia drawn together at 2026 Badminton Asian Team Championships

The men’s teams of Malaysia and Indonesia are set to renew their badminton rivalry after being drawn in the same group at the 2026 Badminton Asian Team Championships, taking place from February 3-8 in Qingdao, China.

The Southeast Asian heavyweights are in Group D alongside Myanmar in the men’s tournament.

The two rivals last met at the Asian Team Championships in the 2022 final, when the likes of Lee Zii Jia, Ng Tze Yong and Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik helped Malaysia emerge victorious.

Elsewhere in the men’s draw, title holders China headline Group A alongside Thailand and Macau; Group B features a competitive trio of Chinese Taipei, South Korea and Hong Kong; and Japan, India and Singapore make up Group C.

In the women’s competition, defending champions India begin their title defence against Thailand and Myanmar in Group Y.

2022 winners Indonesia are in Group X with Japan and Hong Kong, while South Korea, Chinese Taipei and Singapore contest Group Z.

Group W features just two teams, with Malaysia and China facing off in a straight shootout for a place in the knockout round.

Both the men’s and women’s tournaments also serve as the Asian qualification events for the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup, which will be staged in Horsens, Denmark, later in 2026.
