Serena Williams has fuelled speculation of a potential return to Wimbledon after accepting a wildcard entry into the women’s doubles event at the HSBC Championships.

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion is set to make her first professional appearance since the 2022 US Open, where she effectively brought the curtain down on her illustrious playing career.

According to reports, the 44-year-old will partner Canadian rising star Victoria Mboko at the WTA 500 grass-court tournament, which serves as one of the key warm-up events ahead of Wimbledon.

Williams has also posted a video on social media announcing her return to competitive tennis.

In the clip, she appears dressed almost entirely in white, a colour closely associated with Wimbledon and the strict all-white dress code enforced at the All England Club.

Despite there being no confirmation beyond her participation at the Queen’s Club, the timing of her return on grass courts just weeks before Wimbledon has inevitably sparked speculation over a possible wildcard entry into the Championships.

Wimbledon organisers have historically awarded wildcards to former champions and returning stars, particularly in doubles competition.

The 2026 Wimbledon Championships begin on June 29.
