Marc Marquez has explained why he shared a viral photo showing the extent of the damage to his right arm, saying continued questions over his physical condition were becoming a distraction from his MotoGP title challenge.
The reigning world champion surprised fans last week when he posted a series of previously unseen images from the Aragon Grand Prix, including one showing the significant difference in muscle mass between his right and left arms.
Speaking ahead of this weekend’s San Marino Grand Prix, live on SPOTV NOW, Marquez said he decided to share the photo to put an end to speculation over his condition.
“I posted the photo because I believe that is the best way to stop talking about my arm,” Marquez said.
“What I’ve learned in my career is that when there are question marks, rumours and speculation, everything is always easier if you’re honest.”
The condition of Marquez’s right arm is the result of a long injury battle that began when he fractured his humerus in a crash at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
He underwent several operations after complications with the initial injury and eventually had the bone rotated and realigned during a fourth surgery in 2022, which helped him return to the front of MotoGP.
However, the lasting effects of the injury remain visible, with the 33-year-old continuing to deal with reduced muscle mass and strength in his right arm.
“I knew, and I know, what I have, but this way, you already have the picture,” he added.
“You [also] have the interview with my doctor [who can] explain what is going on with my body.
“So now I focus on the fight with what I have in this amazing championship.”
Despite the limitations, Marquez has remained firmly in the title fight and heads to Misano just 19 points behind championship leader Jorge Martin.
The Ducati rider will look to close that gap at a circuit where he has won six times in MotoGP, including the past two San Marino Grands Prix.
