The Milwaukee Brewers swept the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series (NLCS) to reach their first World Series since 1982 and end the defending champions’ bid for a third consecutive title.

Milwaukee completed a 4-0 series victory, reversing last year’s NLCS result when the Dodgers swept the Brewers on their way to a second straight championship.

The Brewers will face either the Cleveland Guardians or Tampa Bay Rays as they pursue the first World Series title in franchise history.

Their return also puts Milwaukee alongside the Houston Astros as only the second team to reach the modern World Series representing both the American and National Leagues.

The Brewers were an American League club when they made their only previous appearance in 1982, losing to the St Louis Cardinals in seven games, before switching to the National League in 1998.

Houston made the journey in the opposite direction, reaching the World Series as a National League team in 2005 before moving to the American League in 2013 and returning to the World Series in 2017.

Milwaukee’s breakthrough follows three unsuccessful NLCS appearances, with defeats by the Cardinals in 2011 and the Dodgers in 2018 and 2025.

Los Angeles, meanwhile, joined the rare of club of defending champions whose title defence ended in a postseason sweep.

Previous examples include the Boston Red Sox, who lost all three Division Series games to the Chicago White Sox in 2005, and the Oakland Athletics, swept by the Cincinnati Reds in the 1990 World Series.

The Dodgers had been seeking to become the first team to win three consecutive World Series since the New York Yankees in 1998-2000.

Their elimination guarantees that this year’s champions will either end a lengthy wait or lift the trophy for the first time.

Like the Brewers, Tampa Bay have never won the World Series, while Cleveland last claimed the championship in 1948.
