The Milwaukee Brewers won their first World Series title after beating the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 on Wednesday to complete a 4-1 series victory.
Jacob Misiorowski allowed just two hits without conceding a run over five and two-thirds innings, while rookie Cooper Pratt drove in two runs as Milwaukee secured the championship in their first World Series appearance since 1982.
Pratt put the Brewers ahead in the second inning before they added another run in the fifth.
William Contreras then drove in Christian Yelich with a double in the sixth and scored on Pratt’s sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
Tampa Bay scored their only run in the ninth, but could not extend the series after avoiding elimination a night earlier.
Contreras was named World Series Most Valuable Player, becoming the first catcher to receive the award since Salvador Perez in 2015.
The Brewers had taken control of the series by winning the first three games, beginning with a 3-2 victory in Milwaukee.
They followed with a 5-4 win in Game 2, recovering from a four-run deficit in the opening inning to take a 2-0 lead to Florida.
Game 3 brought their most convincing performance as Milwaukee scored eight runs in the fifth inning en route to a 10-1 victory.
The Rays prolonged the series with a 4-3 win in 12 innings in Game 4, but Milwaukee finished the job the following night.
The championship capped a season in which the Brewers set a franchise record with 103 regular-season wins before winning 11 of their 13 playoff games.
They beat the San Diego Padres 3-1 in the Division Series and swept the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series, ending the defending champions’ bid for a third consecutive title.
Milwaukee’s young players also entered the record books, with Jackson Chourio finishing with 11 hits, the most in a five-game World Series, and Pratt setting a rookie World Series record with six consecutive hits.
For Tampa Bay, the defeat was their third in the World Series after losses in 2008 and 2020, leaving them still searching for a first championship.
