Max Verstappen struck the first blow in the 2025 Formula 1 title decider, storming to pole position at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Saturday.

The four-time World Champion will share the front row with championship leader Lando Norris, while Oscar Piastri starts third, setting the stage for a tantalizing three-way shootout at Yas Marina.

The Dutchman laid down the gauntlet in Q3, clocking a blistering 1:22.207. Both McLaren drivers attempted to topple the Red Bull ace on their final flying laps but ultimately fell short. Norris finished 0.201 seconds adrift, with Piastri just 0.029 seconds further back behind his teammate.

Attention now shifts entirely to Sunday’s finale. Verstappen faces an uphill battle to overturn Norris’s 12-point advantage, while the Briton knows a podium finish is likely enough to secure his maiden World Championship.

However, the mathematics of this three-way fight remain complex. Oscar Piastri remains a dark horse in the title race, trailing Verstappen by just four points.

The proximity of the two McLarens on the grid also raises the prospect of strategic team orders, as the Woking-based outfit looks to guarantee the Drivers’ Championship returns to their trophy cabinet.

Despite the odds, Verstappen remains defiant.

“Let them watch out,” Verstappen warned after the session. “I have nothing to lose. We’re going all out.”

The pole position—Verstappen’s eighth of the season, the most of any driver in 2025—carries significant historical weight. The statistics heavily favor the pole-sitter at Yas Marina, with the last 10 Grands Prix at this circuit all being won from the front of the grid.

Sunday promises to be a breathless conclusion to one of the closest seasons in recent memory.
