Eala pleased to help tennis grow in Philippines

Alex Eala admitted it felt surreal to see her on-court success play a role in growing tennis in the Philippines.

Since turning professional in March 2020, the 20-year-old has enjoyed a rapid rise and become one of Southeast Asia’s brightest tennis prospects.

She has already captured medals at the Asian Games and the Southeast Asian Games, while continuing to climb the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings.

Most recently, she has broken into the top 40 for the first time, further cementing her status as the highest-ranked Filipino player in tour history.

Reflecting on her growing influence, Eala said she never expected her results to spark a big enthusiasm for the sport back home.

“I only dreamed of making tennis grow in the Philippines, and now I’m bringing a whole new audience to tennis all around the world,” she said ahead of her 2026 Indian Wells Masters campaign.

“The Filipinos, we have such a strong sense of community and I feel like when one of us does well or is succeeding, we all have that shared sense of pride.

“My friends will tell me that the courts are full at home, and just so many things that I didn’t think would happen because of what I’m doing on tour.”

Eala is scheduled to face Ukrainian player Dayana Yastremska on Friday.
