First no Sinner, now no Musetti for Italy in Davis Cup defence

The absence of Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti will have a huge impact on Italy’s Davis Cup campaign.

Lorenzo Musetti pulled out from Italy’s Davis Cup Finals squad less than a week before the start of the tournament in Bologna.

The 23-year-old, who just competed in the season-ending ATP Finals as Novak Djokovic’s late replacement, cited physical and family reasons behind the decision.

“Given my physical condition and my family situation, in agreement with captain Filippo Volandri, I have decided not to participate in the Davis Cup finals in Bologna,” said the 2024 Olympic bronze medalist, whose partner is pregnant with their second child.

“Obviously, there is a lot of regret and disappointment for how I came into this competition. With a better approach, perhaps I would have tried to play it, despite the family commitment.

“I knew that physical fatigue was difficult to shake off after the battles of the last few months, and especially the last few weeks, in one day.”

Italy, who won the past two editions, were already without world number two Jannik Sinner, who announced his withdrawal last month to focus on preparations for next season.

The defending champions are scheduled to face Austria in the first round.
