Johor Darul Ta’zim’s (JDT) rise as a regional powerhouse has been fuelled by their ability to attract foreign talent from across the globe. Among these imports are players who once plied their trade in the Roshn Saudi League, one of Asia’s richest and most star-studded competitions. The league has surged in global visibility in recent years, drawing world-class names such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Sadio Mane, Karim Benzema and many more.
With increased Saudi football coverage on SPOTV NOW, Malaysian fans have become more familiar with the Saudi Pro League, catching glimpses of players potentially crossing over to Malaysian football.
Here are five players who made the journey from Saudi Arabia to Johor.
Heberty
Before arriving at JDT from Bangkok United in 2023, Heberty had already built a prolific reputation in the Thai League. His scoring prowess earned him a move to Al-Shabab for the 2016-17 season, where he registered five goals in 14 appearances. He returned to Thailand shortly after and carved his name into the record books by becoming Thai League 1’s all-time leading scorer, which eventually led him to the Southern Tigers move.
Anselmo de Moraes
A familiar figure in Saudi football, Anselmo spent six seasons with Al-Wehda and Al-Nassr, where his physicality and reliability in midfield made him a constant presence. He made a direct move to JDT in February 2025, but his stint in Malaysia lasted only seven months. Limited to two AFC Champions League outings, he soon secured a move to A-League side Adelaide United.

Alvaro Gonzalez
After turning out for Al-Nassr and Al-Qadsiah in the Kingdom, the experienced Spanish defender joined JDT for their 2024/25 AFC Champions League Elite campaign, bringing leadership and defensive steel. After his Malaysian stint, he returned to Spain to continue his career with Tenerife.
Jorge Santos Silva
Silva arrived at JDT in 2018 after a spell with Saudi outfit Al-Batin. However, the Brazilian attacker spent most of his JDT tenure out on loan in the United Arab Emirates before eventually returning to the Middle East.
Gonzalo Cabrera
The Argentine-Iraqi winger first arrived in Johor on loan from Al-Faisaly in 2017. After impressing with his creativity and consistency, JDT made the move permanent, and he became integral to the club’s domestic dominance. His performances not only made him a fan favourite but also cemented him as one of the most influential foreign players in Malaysian Super League history.
