Meet Malaysian heritage players who have played in A-League

Australia has long been a melting pot of cultures, and the same goes for its national football league. Tucked within the A-League are several players with Malaysian roots, some of which are lesser known.

Their links to the country vary, but each has a clear tie to Malaysian football that adds context to their careers in Australia and abroad.

Brendan Gan

Born in Sydney to a Malaysian Chinese father, Gan is one of the most recognisable A-League players with a direct link to the country. He began his career with Sydney FC before playing for Sabah as a foreign player in the Malaysian Super League, eventually becoming a Malaysian citizen and representing Kelantan, Perak, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur City, as well as the national team. After 12 years playing in Malaysia, Gan returned to Australia in July 2025 to join hometown club Sutherland Sharks.

Matt Davies

Davies was born in Australia to an Australian father and a Malaysian mother, giving him eligibility to play for Malaysia, where he ultimately built his reputation. After starting his career at Perth Glory, he moved early to the Malaysian Super League, joining Pahang and later going to play for Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT). He has also established himself as one of the captains for the Harimau Malaya.

Liridon Krasniqi

The Yugoslavia-born midfielder became a naturalised Malaysian citizen in February 2020 after over five years in the country, where he represented Kedah and Melaka. After signing with JDT, he went on loan to Newcastle Jets in 2021, making his A-League debut in a 2–1 away loss to Sydney FC. Krasniqi went on to feature in nine matches, adding A-League experience to his diverse career across multiple nations.

Nishan Velupillay

The Melbourne Victory stalwart reportedly has Malaysian heritage through his Malaysian-Sri Lankan father. Rumours once linked him to a potential move to represent Malaysia, with the Football Association of Malaysia reportedly interested in his eligibility. However, his senior debut for the Socceroos in 2024 ended that possibility. Meanwhile, Velupillay remains an important attacking presence for Victory, known for his pace and direct play.

Ryan Teague

The K.V. Mechelen midfielder, who played for Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory during his time in the A-League, revealed earlier this year that he was qualified to represent Malaysia through his mother as well as China through his grandparent. However, he ultimately opted to commit internationally to his country of birth. In an ironic twist, he made his senior international debut against China.

Joe Caletti

The former Brisbane Roar and Adelaide United man was born in Kuala Lumpur, which makes him eligible to represent Malaysia under FIFA rules. He currently plays for newly promoted J2 League side Tochigi City. Interestingly, he once captained Australia against Malaysia during the 2014 AFC U-16 Championship.
