Ronaldo scores as Al Nassr set new club record

Rory McIlroy retained his Masters Tournament crown after emerging victorious on Sunday. The Northern Irishman edged out Scottie Scheffler in a tightly contested final round at Augusta National to become just the fourth player to wear the Green Jacket in back-to-back years, joining Jack Nicklaus (1965 & 1966), Nick Faldo (1989 & 1990) and Tiger Woods (2001 & 2002).

The 36-year-old pocketed a cool $4.5 million purse, which was a $300,000 increase over the prize money for his 2025 victory. Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah was penalised following an incident after the chequered flag in Race 2 of the 2026 Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC) season opener at the Sepang International Circuit on Sunday. The JDT Racing Team rider slowed down to celebrate his victory while other riders were still completing the race.

The Race Direction deemed the move dangerous and handed the 31-year-old Malaysian a USD500 fine and a one long lap penalty, which he will serve in Race 1 of the next round he participates in. The penalty put a slight damper on the reigning ASB1000 champion’s dominant weekend in front of his home crowd. Hafizh won both races ahead of Japanese rider Keito Abe and JDT team-mate Andi Farid Izdihar to move to the top of the riders’ standings. He also set a new ASB1000 lap record at Sepang on Saturday with a time of 2:04.335, earning a one million yen bonus. The next ARRC round will take place at the Buriram International Circuit in Thailand in May.

Albirex Niigata Singapore announced on Friday the signing of former Japan international Keisuke Honda for the 2026/27 Singapore Premier League (SPL) season. The club, which will be renamed FC Jurong next season, confirmed that the 39-year-old will join in August in a playing capacity.

"I am delighted to have the opportunity to play for FC Jurong. As I turn 40 this year, I am pursuing several personal challenges, including a Guinness World Record for scoring in the most countries’ top leagues," said Honda. "However, my primary goal with this club is to win the league title. There are a couple of very strong rivals, so it will be a tough challenge, but I am determined to achieve it." Honda enjoyed a decorated career around the world, with notable spells at CSKA Moscow, AC Milan and Melbourne Victory, as well as earning over 90 caps for Japan. His last club was Bhutan Premier League side Paro FC in 2024, while he also managed the Cambodia national team from 2018 to 2023.

FIFA released the final list of match officials for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday, with no representatives from Southeast Asia included. A total of 52 referees, 88 assistant referees and 30 video match officials were selected, drawn from all six confederations and 50 member associations, underlining the global scale of officiating at the upcoming tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) will be represented by officials from Qatar (4), Japan (4), China (4), Saudi Arabia (3), Jordan (3), Uzbekistan (3) and the United Arab Emirates (2), continuing the trend of limited Southeast Asian representation at football’s biggest event. At the previous edition in Qatar in 2022, Singapore’s Muhammad Taqi Aljaafari was Southeast Asia’s sole representative, serving as a video assistant referee (VAR). Prior to that, at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, Malaysia’s Subkhiddin Mohd Salleh served as a fourth official in eight matches, while Singapore’s Jeffrey Goh was named as a reserve assistant referee. The last time a Southeast Asian referee took charge of matches at the World Cup was two decades ago when Singapore’s Shamsul Maidin officiated three group-stage matches in Germany. He was notable for issuing the tournament’s first red card during a match between Trinidad & Tobago and Sweden.
