Alexander Zverev paid an emotional tribute to his mother after winning the US Open, crediting her for refusing to let his childhood diabetes diagnosis limit his ambitions in tennis.<\/p>\n

The German defeated Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2 in Sunday’s final at Arthur Ashe Stadium to claim his first US Open crown and second Grand Slam title.<\/p>\n

Zverev, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of four, revealed that doctors had warned his family that the condition could severely restrict his ability to play sport.<\/p>\n

His mother Irina, however, refused to accept that prognosis and encouraged him to pursue whatever career he wanted.<\/p>\n
