Singapore beat Hong Kong to qualify for 2027 AFC Asian Cup

A second-half strike from Ilhan Fandi sealed Singapore’s place in the AFC Asian Cup for the first time on merit, following a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Hong Kong.

In a tense, winner-takes-all clash at the Kai Tak Stadium on Tuesday, the Lions overturned a deficit to clinch the top spot in Group C and their 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualification with one round remaining, thanks to their superior head-to-head record.

The home side had seized the initiative early when captain Matt Orr powered in a header from Brazilian-born Everton Camargo’s cross in the 15th minute, sending the home fans into a frenzy.

Singapore thought they had drawn level just before half-time through Shawal Anuar, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong were left to rue further missed chances, failing to extend their lead despite creating opportunities.

The momentum shifted decisively in the second half, as Ilhan made an immediate impact off the bench.

The 23-year-old forward first turned provider, setting up Shawal to atone for his disallowed goal with a 64th-minute equaliser.

Just four minutes later, Ilhan wrote his name into Singaporean football folklore by scoring what proved to be the winning goal, arguably the most significant in the country’s modern football history.

Hong Kong launched a desperate onslaught in search of an equaliser, but Singapore’s defence stood firm to secure a famous victory.

The result booked the Lions’ ticket to the prestigious continental showpiece in Saudi Arabia, marking their first appearance since they hosted the tournament in 1984.
