Uncertainty is mounting over the 2025 SEA Games as severe floods continue to sweep across Thailand, raising doubts about the country’s readiness to host the regional multi-sport event.
Thailand is set to host the 33rd SEA Games across Bangkok, Chonburi and Songkhla, with events unofficially beginning on December 3 and running for 17 days.
However, recent torrential downpours submerged parts of the country including Songkhla, which the Thai government declared a disaster zone on Tuesday.
Local media reported that the sports originally taking place in that province, including football, silat, karate, wushu, wrestling and Muay Thai, would be moved to other venues as a result.
Meteorological forecasts warn that heavy rainfall could continue into early 2026, raising the likelihood of further disruptions and last-minute logistical adjustments.
With less than two weeks before the opening ceremony on December 9, organisers are expected to provide clearer updates on the fate of the Southeast Asian showpiece soon.
