Arne Slot gambles on unity over star power as fractured Liverpool face Inter test

The lights of the San Siro are set to blaze for a Champions League night that promises heavy consequences, but the shadow looming over this fixture was cast long before the teams arrived in Milan.

Liverpool travel to Italy not just seeking points, but searching for an identity amidst a week of unprecedented turbulence. While Inter aim to bounce back from their first European defeat of the campaign—a tight 1-2 loss to Atlético Madrid—the narrative is dominated by the chaos engulfing their visitors.

For Arne Slot, this is arguably the most precarious moment of his tenure. Liverpool are in a tailspin, having lost three of their last six matches in all competitions, including a bruising 1-4 capitulation to PSV on Matchday 4.

But the form guide is currently secondary to the internal fracture threatening to derail their season: the public fallout with Mohamed Salah.

Following a dressing room outburst that laid bare the squad’s internal tensions, Slot has made the seismic decision to leave the Egyptian talisman on Merseyside.

It is a gamble that screams of a manager drawing a line in the sand, prioritizing collective discipline over individual brilliance.

Despite the turmoil, those within the Inter camp are refusing to be lulled into a false sense of security.

“We’ll be facing a great team with many champions,” insisted Inter forward Marcus Thuram. “When a team like that is called into question, everyone wants to prove something. People say it’s a good time to play them because of their form, but I don’t think so. I expect a reaction.”

Inter manager Cristian Chivu echoed that sentiment, dismissing the idea that Liverpool are vulnerable without their star winger.

“Mo is important on a world-class level, but these are not problems that concern us,” Chivu said. “I know they have players who can replace him. Liverpool will maintain the high level they have shown throughout their history.”

History, however, offers a mixed forecast. While Liverpool have won four of the last six meetings between the sides, the San Siro remains a fortress.

Inter have won their last four home games against English opposition in the league phase. Furthermore, the Nerazzurri carry the pedigree of recent European royalty, having reached the Champions League final twice in the last three years.

For Slot, the challenge is tactical as well as psychological. He was quick to praise the continuity of this Inter side, noting the seamless transition from the Simone Inzaghi era to Chivu’s current reign.

“We face a very good, strong team that has been a force in the Champions League for three seasons,” Slot observed. “I see more similarities than differences [since the managerial change]. The system remains, the personnel is largely the same. Perhaps Chivu has tweaked the pressing triggers higher up the pitch, but the blueprint is identical to Inzaghi’s.”

With Liverpool needing a win to climb to 12 points and stabilize their European campaign, and Inter looking to reassert their dominance at home, the stage is set. It is a clash of a stable Italian powerhouse against an English giant trying to remember who they are without their leading man.
