Fifth time lucky for Marquez at Mandalika?

The 2026 MotoGP title fight heads to Mandalika this weekend, with Marc Marquez closing in on the championship lead as he returns to a circuit where he has never finished a Grand Prix.

The reigning champion won both the Sprint and Sunday race at Motegi to move within two points of Jorge Martin. Marquez now has 331 points to the Aprilia rider’s 333, leaving little margin for error with six rounds remaining.

However, carrying that form into the Indonesian Grand Prix will mean overcoming a miserable record at Mandalika, where he has never completed a Sunday race.

Here’s how Marquez’s fortunes have unfolded at the Indonesian circuit since its arrival on the MotoGP calendar.

2022: Ruled out before the start

Marquez missed Mandalika’s inaugural Grand Prix after a violent highside at Turn 7 during the morning warm-up left him with concussion.

The Repsol Honda rider was declared unfit to race and later suffered a recurrence of double vision, forcing him to miss the following round in Argentina as well.

2023: A weekend without points

His return brought two opportunities to score after MotoGP introduced Sprints, but Marquez crashed out of both races.

He fell on the opening lap on Saturday and again halfway through Sunday’s Grand Prix, leaving Indonesia empty-handed in his final season with Repsol Honda.

2024: Hopes go up in flames

Marquez showed more promise after switching to Gresini Ducati, recovering from two qualifying crashes to finish third in the Sprint for his first points in Indonesia.

However, his Sunday challenge ended on lap 12 when an engine failure forced him to pull off the track with his bike on fire.

2025: A costly first-lap collision

Fresh from securing his seventh MotoGP title in Japan, Marquez lasted just six corners before Marco Bezzecchi hit him from behind at Turn 7. Both riders crashed, with Marquez suffering a fracture and ligament damage in his right shoulder.

The injury required surgery and ruled him out of the final four rounds, turning his first weekend as the newly crowned champion into his last race appearance of the season.
