Buendia’s Last-Gasp Winner Stuns Arsenal as Aston Villa Close Gap at the Top

Arsenal are beginning to feel the heat at the summit of the Premier League table after suffering their second league defeat of the season, a dramatic 2-1 loss to a resurgent Aston Villa side at Villa Park on Saturday (6/12/2025)

The Gunners were rocked early when Villa struck in the 36th minute. Pau Torres whipped a teasing ball across the Arsenal penalty area, and Matty Cash ghosted in unmarked. His first-time volley was pure perfection—lashed out of the air and past David Raya at blistering pace.

It was a rare lapse for Arsenal, who had conceded in the first half of a league match only three times prior this season. They had won one and drawn two of those games, but this time the script flipped.

The Gunners emerged for the second half with renewed purpose and found their equaliser in the 52nd minute, courtesy of substitute Leandro Trossard. It was a fluid attacking move initiated by Martin Ødegaard and Bukayo Saka down the right flank.

Saka’s low ball across the six-yard box zipped past the outstretched hand of Emi Martínez, leaving Trossard with a simple finish at the far post. The goal was Trossard’s 50th in the Premier League, and the second time he has scored in three successive league matches since February 2024.

But Villa weren’t done. Deep into stoppage time, the stadium erupted. Emi Buendia delivered the knockout blow in the 95th minute, curling a sumptuous strike past Raya from 10 yards out.

Moments earlier, Raya had produced a miraculous save to deny Youri Tielemans on the line, but Villa kept the pressure alive—and Buendia made it count. It was the final kick of the game.

The win moves Unai Emery’s side within three points of Arsenal at the top and extends their remarkable run to five consecutive victories.

Since their 0-2 defeat at Anfield on November 1, Villa have beaten Bournemouth, Leeds, Wolves, Brighton, and now Arsenal—a stark contrast to their sluggish start, when they didn’t register a win until Matchweek 6.

“Incredible,” Buendia said post-match. “This team has shown so much character in recent weeks, coming from behind and fighting until the last second. Today, against the league leaders, we did it again. Really, really incredible win.”

For Arsenal, it’s a bitter pill to swallow—their second loss of the campaign after a 1-0 defeat at Liverpool in August. Mikel Arteta admitted the manner of the defeat was hard to take:

“In the first half we had moments, but didn’t manage the ball well. After the break we were dominant, scored, and controlled the game. But we allowed spaces and gave balls away. Last kick of the game—goal-kick, second ball, chaos in the box—and you end up losing it. It’s painful.”
