Chelsea delivered a powerful statement on the European stage, defeating rivals FC Barcelona 3-0 in a performance that blended tactical discipline with clinical attacking, propelling the London club forward with a renewed sense of confidence.

Manager Enzo Maresca acknowledged the significance of the result, though stressed the need to keep perspective. “It’s a good win,  no more than that. They are all important games,” he told Amazon Prime after the match. However, he couldn’t hide his satisfaction in overcoming one of the sport’s giants: “To beat Barcelona is always nice… we are happy today.”

A Tactical Victory: Keep Ball, Clean Sheet

Maresca’s strategy was clearly defined by a deep understanding of the opposition. Knowing Barcelona’s reliance on possession, the Blues sought to beat them at their own game.

“If Barcelona don’t have the ball they don’t feel comfortable,” Maresca explained. “So we tried to keep the ball.”

Crucially, the performance was built on a solid foundation at the back, evidenced by the clean sheet. “The defensive part is always important, clean sheet. You need to do that if you want to achieve important things.” This tactical maturity underscores the “winning mentality” Maresca is instilling at the club.

The Estevão Effect: A Star is Born

While the team’s collective effort secured the three points, the night belonged to teenage sensation, Estevão Willian, whose dazzling individual goal was the talk of the evening.

For Maresca, the night was “a huge night for Estêvã, a huge night for the whole club.”

Speaking immediately after the match, the delight was clear on the 18 years old Brazilian face. “I don’t really have any words to sum up how I’m feeling. The perfect night. I’m grateful to God onwards and upwards.”

Describing his stunning goal, the youngster said it “just happened before I even knew it I wriggled through.” He immediately recognised the importance of the moment: “It was definitely the most special moment of my career. I am so happy my family were here watching.”

Estevão also expressed a strong bond with the Blues faithful: “From the moment I arrived here at Chelsea I felt a connection with the fans… I hope I can score many more goals and keep them happy.”

Building a Winning Mentality

Beyond the scoreline, the victory serves as a massive boost to the squad’s self-belief. Maresca specifically highlighted the recent success in the Club World Cup as a catalyst for the current form.

“Winning the Club World Cup has been important for the players in terms of confidence,” he noted. “They realise they can win against any team… a winning mentality… it is the only way to build something important.”

With a significant three points secured, the focus for the Blues quickly shifts back to domestic matters. Maresca confirmed the immediate priority: “Now is time to think about Arsenal.”
