Fourth Time’s the Charm: Tomokazu Harimoto Finally Claims Emotional WTT Finals Title in Hong Kong

Truls Moregard and Tomokazu Harimoto in the trophy presentation of WTT Finals Hong Kong 2025.

On Sunday, December 14, 2025, a four-year odyssey reached its triumphant conclusion. Tomokazu Harimoto finally realised his dream, lifting the Men’s Singles trophy at the WTT Finals Hong Kong 2025 for the first time in his career.

His emotional, hard-fought victory over Sweden’s Truls Moregard in the final (11-8, 5-11, 11-9, 10-12, 14-12, 11-2) exorcised the ghosts of years past.

For Harimoto, the memory of three previous final-hurdle defeats in 2021, 2022, and 2024 had left him with an undeniable point to prove. Meanwhile, Moregard came into the clash with history in mind, aiming to become the first European player ever to capture a WTT Finals singles winner’s title.

The Turning Point

The finale was an end-to-end spectacle featuring two of the sport’s most electrifying titans, with a palpable air of expectation hanging over the arena. The contest hinged on the pivotal fifth game—a game that proved to be a defining turning point.

Moregard, the recent Europe Smash – Sweden 2025 champion, had set up three game points at a commanding 10-7 lead and even turned to his coaching corner, sensing the momentum was his.

But Harimoto, demonstrating ice-cold resolve, clawed the margin back to 10-9. Moregard immediately called a timeout, a tactical move designed to ‘ice’ the game, but the break proved to be in vain. Harimoto, refusing to yield, battled his way to a sensational 14-12 victory in the tie-break, seizing a 3-2 lead in the match.

The emotional contrast in that moment was stark. Harimoto erupted in sheer jubilation; Moregard returned to his corner, head down in dejection.

From that moment, the contest became one-way traffic. With the finish line in sight, Harimoto upped the ante, unleashing one final, overwhelming burst of energy to seal the deal in the sixth game and complete the dramatic six-game victory.

“I just can’t believe I did it, I am the champion of this event. I’d like to celebrate the victory with my team tomorrow. Truls has various skills. His forehand and backhand are both strong and he not only hits the backhand, but he cuts and blocks the ball,” said Harimoto.

“The trivial change in his tactics is what made me struggle. That’s what makes him a wonderful player. I only have gratitude towards my fans. To the fans that came to watch, and to all who watched me live and supported me through media, thank you for supporting me all the time. I want to share more of these victorious moments with you. I’m determined to work harder to keep making these moments happen.”
