Alexander Zverev is set to become world number one for the first time after Jannik Sinner announced he will miss the rest of the 2026 season to undergo treatment for a knee injury.
The German will become the 30th man to top the ATP rankings and only the second from his country, following Boris Becker.
Sinner confirmed his decision on Tuesday, having not played since beating Zverev in the Wimbledon final in July.
The Italian will miss the remaining tournaments, including the Paris Masters and ATP Finals, where he won the titles last year.
His absence clears Zverev’s path to the top because ranking points expire after 52 weeks, with Sinner losing the points from his late-season results in 2025 without being able to replace them.
Zverev remains world number two for now, but has already earned enough points to overtake Sinner before the season ends, even if he does not win another match.
The milestone will add to a breakthrough year for the 29-year-old, who won his first Grand Slam title at the French Open before claiming his second at the US Open.
