EA Sports FC has renamed its world championship trophy in honour of the late Diogo Jota, with the prize now officially known as the Diogo Jota FC Pro World Championship Trophy.
With the blessing of his family, the announcement was made on Friday to mark the first anniversary of the Portugal international’s death.
Away from the pitch, the former Liverpool forward was widely regarded as one of football’s most accomplished gamers and regularly competed in EA Sports FC events.
He won the 2020 ePremier League Invitational while representing Wolverhampton Wanderers and later founded his own esports organisation, LUNA Esports.
The renamed trophy would be presented for the first time at this year’s FC Pro World Championship as part of the Esports World Cup later this month.
EA Sports FC added that it would continue working with Jota’s family on future initiatives to honour his legacy.
