Five-time motorcycle world champion Mick Doohan waved the chequered flag at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia on Sunday as Formula One returned to Sepang for the first time since 2017.

The Australian brought the race to a close as Max Verstappen crossed the line for his first victory of the season, ahead of Kimi Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton.

The race was held at Sepang International Circuit after being relocated from Bahrain because of the conflict in the Middle East.

Doohan’s appearance gave motorcycle racing fans a familiar face at the finish of a rain-disrupted afternoon.

He won five consecutive 500cc world titles with Honda from 1994 to 1998 and claimed 54 Grand Prix victories, establishing himself as one of the sport’s most successful riders.

Doohan also has a family connection to F1 through his son Jack, who raced for Alpine before joining Haas as a reserve driver this year.

Sepang will next welcome MotoGP for the Malaysian Grand Prix from October 30 to November 1, with fans able to watch the action live on SPOTV NOW.
