Cerezo Osaka manager Arthur Papas has reportedly emerged as a candidate for the Al Ettifaq job following an impressive season in Japan.

According to local reports, the Saudi Pro League side would not be renewing the contract of current manager Saad Al-Shehri despite helping the club to finish seventh in the league and qualify for next season’s AGCFF Gulf Club Champions League.

Should the move materialise, it would mark a return to Al Ettifaq for Papas, who briefly served as an assistant coach at the club during the 2016/17 season.

The Australian was recently named J.League Manager of the Year for the West Division after guiding a Cerezo Osaka side consisting of former Japan international Shinji Kagawa and Malaysia captain Dion Cools to third place overall in the one-off J1 100 Year Vision League competition.

The 46-year-old previously led Buriram United to the 2023/24 Thai League 1 title and was also part of Yokohama F. Marinos’ coaching staff during their J1 League-winning campaign in 2019.
